The State of the EU Digital Identity Wallet – Expert survey report
The European Union aims for a highly secure, trustworthy, and empowering cross-border digital identification and data (attributes) sharing solution. A digital identity wallet under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, realized through Member states. What do experts on this topic feel is most important? What to pay attention to, and where are we making good progress?
We surveyed experts who attended the Identity Week Europe conference on the topic. They were asked about the current state of this development and what they consider key themes for the EU Digital Identity Wallet (DIW) in 2023.

Sneak peek into the insights
Some of the ambitions of the EU were recognized. For example, with the EU member state citizen as the party that should (and will) obtain the most benefits. Other aspects were identified as under-addressed, such as the entire ecosystem perspective and the business model for the parties involved.
Report and research specifications
The expert survey was conducted by Jacoba Sieders and Henk Marsman of SonicBee in collaboration with the Identity Week team (Terrapinn). This joint research was done in May and June 2023, leading up to Identity Week Europe 2023 conference in Amsterdam on June 13th and 14th, 2023. Selected experts from the conference panels were invited to respond. Preliminary results were discussed at the conference on June 14th, and reflections from that discussion are included in this report.
