The State of the EU Digital Identity Wallet – Expert survey report

Through member states, the European Union aims to realize a highly secure, trustworthy, and empowering cross-border digital identification and data (attributes) sharing solution – a digital identity wallet (under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation). With this purpose in mind, what do experts on this topic feel is most important? Moreover, what do they feel is significant to pay attention to, and where are we making good progress?
We surveyed experts who attended the Identity Week Europe conference and asked them what they think is the current state of this development and what they consider key themes for the EU Digital Identity Wallet (DIW) in 2023. You can find a selection of the topics on which the report provides insight below.
Key Insights from the EU Digital Identity Wallet – Expert survey report
- the most significant use cases
- the benefits and motivators of parties involved in this development to contribute
- the risks that are present
- and the societal impact and values at stake
Recognition and Challenges
Some of the ambitions of the EU were recognized. For example, with the EU member state citizen as the party that should (and will) obtain the most benefits. However, other aspects were identified as under-addressed, such as the entire ecosystem perspective and the business model for the parties involved.
Methodology and Collaboration
The expert survey was conducted by Jacoba Sieders and Henk Marsman of SonicBee together with the Identity Week team (Terrapinn) in May and June 2023. Leading up to the Identity Week Europe 2023 conference, held in Amsterdam on June 13th and 14th, 2023, selected experts from the conference panels were invited to respond. Preliminary results were discussed at the conference on June 14th, and reflections from that discussion are included in this report.
